Ask the Vet-A monthly section of questions and answers 1.) What is ringbone? How will it affect my horse? Dr. Veneklasen "Ringbone is new bone growth that occurs on the proximal middle or distal phalanx. It is the result of a periostitis and may lead to an osteoarthritis or ankylosis of the pastern (proximal interphalalangeal) or coffin (distal interphalangeal) joints. This condition is seldom found in thoroughbreds but is relatively common in other breeds. The prognosis is usually unfavorable if the ringbone progresses." 2.) What is navicular syndrome? Can the deterioration be slowed down? Dr. Veneklasen "Navicular syndrome is a painful disorder with associated gait abnormalities. It is centered in the palmar (heel) asept of one or both forefeet and is due to degenerative changes in the distal sesamoid bone (navicular bone). The deterioration can be slowed down with proper corrective shoeing." 3.) What is laminitis? How can it be prevented? Dr. Veneklasen
"Laminitis is a very complex metabolic disease; the end result of the metabolic alterations that occur is decreased capillary perfusion (blood flow) of the foot. Whether acute or chronic, each occurrence is unique. For this reason, standard method of care does not exist. However, good feeding practices can help prevent this disease."
